Tips for Sustainable Travel

Traveling is one of the most enriching experiences we can have. But it’s also a great opportunity to make a difference in the world. At Tartarukus, where we create wildlife conservation volunteer experiences in Oaxaca, we believe tourism can (and should) be a tool for positive transformation. That’s why we want to share these tips for sustainable travel.

What is sustainable tourism?

Sustainable tourism is becoming increasingly appealing around the world—and at the same time, it has become a necessity. Sustainable tourism is about traveling consciously, taking care of the places we visit, respecting the communities that welcome us, and leaving a positive footprint.
It’s not about avoiding travel out of fear of using up resources, but rather about traveling better and more responsibly.

How can we protect natural resources as responsible travelers?

Every small decision we make while traveling matters. That’s why it’s so important to be mindful of our practices while on a trip—especially when traveling in groups. Every detail counts, from how much water we use to how we manage or reduce our waste. Taking care of natural resources and practicing responsible tourism is an act of love and respect for the life around us.

In our volunteer programs, we always prioritize environmentally friendly practices by consuming as responsibly as possible and reducing our impact as much as we can. But how do we do this? With small actions, like reusing our water bottles, avoiding disposable products when eating, and working hand-in-hand with projects and activities that care for nature and act responsibly.

Sustainable tourism: beyond the destination

Being a sustainable traveler means understanding that our vacations or academic trips are not separate from today’s global reality—our actions matter, no matter the time or place. The choices we make as visitors directly impact local ecosystems and communities.

Have you ever asked yourself while traveling: Am I supporting local businesses? Am I being respectful of the culture? Am I leaving this place better than I found it?
We usually don’t ask these questions, but they are the best way to become a responsible traveler and make your trip a meaningful experience—for both yourself and your surroundings.

Tips for Sustainable Travel

  • 🌿 Plan with intention: Learn about the culture, the socio-economic context, and the local environment of the place you’re visiting. It’ll help you prepare and set the right expectations.
  • 🚰 Bring reusables: A reusable water bottle, cloth bag, reusable straw, cutlery, collapsible travel mug, refillable toiletry bottles… less waste, more well-being!
  • 🚲 Move in eco-friendly ways: Walk, bike, or take public transportation whenever possible.
  • 🛍️ Support local: Buy crafts and consume local products. Try to find items made from biodegradable materials and always avoid single-use products if they’re not necessary.
  • 🧼 Respect natural areas: Don’t leave trash—or traces. If you can, pick up some litter along the way. Nature will thank you. Leave only your footprints.

Tips for Being a Sustainable Tourist

  • 👂 Listen and learn: Every place has its own stories and values. Here on the coast of Oaxaca, there’s an incredible intercultural richness—you’ll be amazed by the food, music, dances, and traditions.
  • 🤲 Be humble: Don’t arrive to impose—arrive to share. Community members will welcome you with open arms and great enthusiasm.
  • 📸 Share your photos: Photos are a powerful resource. If you can, share pictures of the animals and communities with the people themselves—they might want to visit the destination too. Always tell your story without stereotypes and take photos respectfully.
  • 💚 Give back through actions: Your visit can leave more than just memories. Take care of the places you go and, if possible, leave something meaningful and positive behind.

Examples of Sustainable Tourism

At Tartarukus, we live sustainable tourism in action:
Volunteers support local communities to protect sea turtles, reforest forests, clean up beaches, and learn from the wisdom of local Mexican communities.

We offer you an experience where you’ll live closely with local communities, stay with Mexican families, participate in workshops, and enjoy traditional food—sharing daily life with the people. It’s Tourism with a human touch.

Conclusion: Traveling is also a decision

We can choose how to see the world.
We can travel to consume… or to connect.
We can be tourists… or changemakers.

At Tartarukus, we believe in tourism that cares, listens, and transforms. In experiences that reconnect us with what matters most: life. That’s why we are constantly reflecting on how to improve our habits and practices to make sustainable tourism a reality.
