SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS IN MEXICO

At Tartarukus, our main goal is to make conservation a quality of livehood for those local groups who decided that the explotation of natural resources was not for them anymore. We partner with different turtle camps open to receive volunteers who can support sea turtle conservation in Mexico, specifically, in Oaxaca coast, where we are located.

We have available 3 turtle conservation programs for volunteers:

TURTLE CONSERVATION – VENTANILLA

VENTANILLA

Ventanilla is an amazing community where the organization focus on the conservation of its biodiversity. In this community, the turtles, the crocodiles, mangroves and different species are the important ones for the community to thrive.

Living by the beach, you will join the team protecting the sea turtle females and their nests from trading, keeping the eggs in hatcheries until the day that they hatch and you will support in the maintenance of the baby crocodiles, as a part of a reintroduction in the wildlife program, whenever it’s needed.

This program is open from 15th of June to 30th of April.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TURTLE CONSERVATION PROGRAM IN VENTANILLA

  • You will live by the beach (not available for swimming) in one paradisiacan community well organized to protect the biodiversity.
  • You will work with a community turtle camp, with whom you will be involved deeply.
  • You will have to cross the lagoon and learn from its biodiversity every time that the baby crocodiles need you.
  • You are very close to Mazunte (10 minutes by car), where the backpackers vibe is everywhere, being able to join to many events and enjoy the beach.

5:00 – 7:00 PM:Tasks could be: support in the releasing of baby turtles, environmental talks with tourism, beach cleanups, maintaining a clean area for nesting turtles, tree planting, …

10:00 PM – 3:00 AM or 3:00 AM-6:AM :Night patrols. Patrolling the beach to spot nesting turtles, count eggs in nests, accompanying the person in charge while collecting and placing the nests in the hatchery, registering data, and digging the holes where the nests will be in the hatchery. The night patrols are in ATV

TURTLE RANGER – CHACAHUA

CHACAHUA

Join us to protect Sea Turtles as a volunteer in Chacahua, an afro-mexican community where surf and nature are the most characteristic elements in the area.

Living by the beach, you will join the team protecting the sea turtle females and their nests from trading, keeping the eggs in hatcheries until the day that they hatch.

This program is open from the 15th of October to 15th of April.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TURTLE RANGER PROGRAM IN CHACAHUA

  • You will live by the beach (available for swimming) in one paradisiacan Island not very touristic, but known between surfers, which gives it an amazing vibe
  • You will work with a community turtle camp, with whom you will be involved deeply.
  • You will have included an extra activity per week: a surf lesson, a tour to see bioluminiscence in the water at night or a day with a beekeeping project in Chacahua National Park.
  • During winter, it’s possible to see Leatherback sea turtles, the biggest turtles worldwide!

TURTLE CONSERVATION – BAJOS DE CHILA

BAJOS DE CHILA

Bajos de Chila is a community very well connected with Puerto Escondido, just about 10 minutes far by public transport. The beach where you will work is Palmarito, a very long beach where turtles nest along the year.

You will join the team protecting the sea turtle females and their nests from trading, keeping the eggs in hatcheries until the day that they hatch and you will support in the maintenance of the baby crocodiles, as a part of a reintroduction in the wildlife program, whenever it’s needed.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TURTLE CONSERVATION PROGRAM IN BAJOS DE CHILA

  • You will live in a volunteer’s home, adapted to the needs of travelers like you and surrounded by a big team
  • You will work with a community turtle camp, with whom you will be involved deeply.
  • You will be able to go to Puerto Escondido for about a dollar in public transport and enjoy surfer and travelers vibes.
  • You will be working in different beaches: Bacocho in Puerto Escondido, Palmarito, Agua Dulce and Puerto Suelo beaches.
