A volunteering let us to bring out the best of ourselves. During this experience, you will not only get to know some of the most charismatic places in Oaxaca coast, but you will also participate in the conservation of protected species, working together with people who live to protect them every single day.

You will live a very special experience with a small group of people who share your same will: to contribute their grain of sand to the nature conservation, at the same time as to grow, live and enjoy a different and sustainable life.

This project aims to strengthen the work of those community groups who are dedicating their lifes to protect species and their natural habitats.

Coming to this responsible trip, you will enjoy the wonders of Oaxaca while you learn how to live in a natural way. Your contribution will allow groups to fund their conservation activities and make possible the protection of endangered species.

Conservation activities in La Ventanilla

During our period in La Ventanilla community, we will support the local cooperative in the conservation activities of the turtles, its lagoon and the mangroves, as well as the wildlife protection area, wildlife protection area, called UMA.

In turn, in our free time during the day, we can visit some beaches near to Ventanilla community, such as Mazunte and Zipolite to swim and meet travelers.

We will participate in the conservation activities, such as:

  • Walking the beach at night to protect sea turlte eggs from hunters
  • Supporting the group during the sunset to release hatchlings 
  • Carrying out environmental education activities.
  • Monitoring crocodiles in the lagoon through a cayuco tour 
  • Supporting the feeding and supervisi of White-tailed Deer, protected from the great persecution of the species throughout the coast.

Escobilla is a privileged community where takes place the arribada phenomenon: tens of thousands of sea turtles come to nest massively during nesting season over 3 to 5 days per month.

In your free time, you can visit nearby places like Puerto Escondido and its incredible beaches.

During our period with the group in charge of protecting the beach, we will support the group:

  • Patroling the beach at night crossing the lagoon in cayuco to access the beach. While walking, we will collect the eggs that we find and relocate them in the hatchety for their protection
  • Supporting checking nests once the hatchlings have hatched
  • Carrying out environmental educacion activities
  • (If there is arribada) We will protect the females during the Arribada phenomenon at sunset
  • (If there are massive births) We will release the babies who are hatching furthest from the beach at dawn

Morro Ayuta Beach

Morro Ayuta is a privileged beach 7 km far from Río Seco, the community where we will live. This beach also receive more than 1,5 millions of sea turltes every year.

During your free time, you can visit nearby places like Huatulco to snorkel, Barra de la Cruz for surfers or Chipehua dunes.

During our period with the group in charge of protecting the beach, we will support the group:

El Gavilan Jungle

El Gavilán, is a jungle of more than 1000 ha which has been donated for the conservation by a group of more than 30 people.

To monitor and protect species of this incredible jungle, they will take us by car from San Francisco Cozoaltepec and we will start a journey to find the best places to place or collect photo-traps cameras.

We will stop at the view point and we will return after seeing the most magical places of this wonderful jungle

Where are you going to live?

This is a very simple map of Oaxaca coast. The best airport to arrive is Huatulco (HUX) to do the 11 days program in El Gavilan jungle, La Ventanilla, Escobilla and Morro Ayuta beaches.

Volunteering experiences dates, 2022

We have calls for volunteering groups to be involved in the conservation experiences every month to support local groups! These dates are set when there is the effect of the waning moon, so we have more chances to see the mass nesting phenomenon, but it is never sure.

WHAT IS IT INCLUDED?

  • Shared cabañas with private bathroom in the middle of nature, next to the lagoon in Escobilla and common bathroom in the indigenous community of Ventanilla.
  • 3 meals per day during working days. Lunch and dinner elaborated by oaxacan cook to whom we will help when possible (there are options for vegetarians and vegans).
  • Local guide who will teach you to understand nature in a completely different way.
  • Activities coordinador to unlock your full potential
  • Basic material to work and for common using.
  • Accompaniment in public transport between the conservation projects.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED

  • National or international flights
  • Transport and services for free time activities
  • Food during free days and outside our workplace
  • Special drinks or food

If you are travelling in Mexico and you don’t have enought time to participate but you would like to spend a bit of your time supporting local groups and having a unique experience protecting turtles and wildlife, we will be happy to work with you!

Depending on the situation, you will be able to join to one group already gathered for the days that you would like to participate in the program or make one itinerary for you to get involved in the conservation activities that you choose.
